Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia’s Ministry of Public Works reinforced its commitment to expediting recovery measures to rehabilitate and reconstruct irrigation infrastructure damaged by last year’s floods and landslides in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra.

“The Public Works Ministry is working to accelerate the repair of irrigation networks both through emergency response activities and rehabilitation and reconstruction projects to recover irrigation services in disaster-hit regions and sustain people’s farming activities,” Minister Dody Hanggodo told ANTARA in Jakarta on Thursday.

He explained that irrigation recovery efforts are being carried out under the division of authority between central and regional governments.

Citing data from the ministry’s Disaster Response System (Sitaba), Hanggodo noted that the November 2023 disasters affected 31 irrigation areas under central government responsibility.

Of these, 12 have been restored and five remain under rehabilitation as of July 12, while the rest will be handled gradually.

He further said Sitaba showed 65 irrigation areas under regional government authority were hit by the disasters, with two already recovered and reconstruction work underway at the remaining 63.

“The government, through the Ministry of Public Works, continues to expedite the execution of rehabilitation and reconstruction of infrastructure after the disasters in the provinces of Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra,” the minister reiterated.

Hanggodo added that the government is referring to the Master Plan for Post-Disaster Rehabilitation and Reconstruction of Sumatra 2026-2028 in carrying out irrigation recovery, aiming to guarantee improved standards and durability of infrastructure once restored.

He confirmed recovery projects are underway in some regions, though he admitted others remain in preparatory stages involving administrative procedures, procurement, and contracting.

The Public Works Ministry, he continued, is committed to advancing all projects to ensure timely completion and deliver benefits to disaster-hit communities across Sumatra.
