Two Thai women sentenced to seven years for Bali hashish smuggling - ANTARA News Jawa Timur

Denpasar, Bali (ANTARA) - The Denpasar District Court has sentenced two Thai women to seven years in prison each for smuggling 308.25 grams of hashish from Thailand to the Indonesian resort island of Bali.

"After considering the case, the court sentences defendant one Mayuree Prasomtong, 39, and defendant two Nontiya Janpech, 23, to seven years in prison each," presiding Judge Kusuma Wardhani said in Denpasar on Thursday.

The panel found both defendants legally and convincingly guilty of conspiring to illegally possess a Class I narcotic, as charged under the prosecution's first alternative count.

The offense falls under Article 610(1)(a) of Law No. 1 of 2023 on the Criminal Code, as amended by Law No. 1 of 2026 on Criminal Adjustments, and Article 132(1) of the 2009 Narcotics Law.

The judges also found both defendants guilty of using a Class I narcotic for personal use, under the prosecution's third cumulative charge, in violation of Article 127(1)(a) of the 2009 Narcotics Law.

The seven-year sentences were one year below the eight-year prison terms sought by prosecutors from the Badung District Prosecutor's Office over the alleged smuggling of 308.25 grams of hashish.

The court also fined each defendant 100 million rupiah (US$5,587). If unpaid, the fines will be replaced with 60 days in prison.

As an aggravating factor, the judges said foreigners entering Indonesia are required to comply with Indonesian law, including regulations governing narcotics possession.

The panel also said the defendants' actions were prohibited and could endanger public safety and the country's younger generation.

Mitigating factors included the defendants' polite conduct during the trial and the fact that neither had previously been convicted.

The defendants, accompanied by an interpreter and defense lawyers, said they were still considering whether to appeal the verdict.

Prosecutors said the case began on March 10, 2026 when customs officers detained the women at I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport after they arrived on Thai AirAsia flight FD398F from Don Mueang, Thailand.

After an X-ray scan and searches of their bodies and luggage, officers found six packages of hashish hidden inside diapers worn by the defendants.

"During the body search, officers found six packages of hashish hidden by the defendants inside their respective diapers," the prosecutor said.

Three packages found on Mayuree weighed 156.88 grams gross, or 155.25 grams net. Three found on Nontiya weighed 154.53 grams gross, or 153 grams net.

The total seized evidence weighed 311.41 grams gross, or 308.25 grams net, according to prosecutors.
